Spectrum Wrestling Classics

In today's wrestling world, there is much "ado" about WWE 24/7 and the MSG Network's repeating of classic wrestling footage from 1970's/1980's broadcasts of classic Madison Square Garden wrestling programs.  Unfortunately, there is precious little attention provided to the classic Spectrum Wrestling cards that used to air on the now (long) defunct Philadelphia based PRISM pay channel

For those not familiar with PRISM, this was a local pay channel that cost $25 a month and was available on basic cable services in New Jersey, Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia did not have basic cable until roughly 1985 with the exception of South Philadelphia. PRISM offered movies and local sports programming such as Flyers, Sixers and Phillies games. If it were not for PRISM, the videos of these sports events would have never been made. In that regard, PRISM preserved an enormous amount of Philly sports history which included Spectrum Wrestling starting in 1977.

Since Philly was primarily without basic cable thanks to political nonsense, 'pay channels' using a local UHF base (yes, this is complicated) started with channel 65 serving as a conduit for WHT and later Channel 57 served as the conduit for "Select TV". Select TV later was taken over by Prism and then, within a short period of time, basic cable FINALLY made it to Philadelphia.

Sadly, due to falling attendance, the airing of Spectrum wrestling programs were cancelled. Then again, the wrestling matches at the Spectrum were no longer 'major events' as TV and PPV became the primary showcase.

If you can get WWE 24/7, Spectrum Classics are as part of the "old school" series. Check them out when you get a chance.

I certainly agree that it sucks that there is no way to relive the Spectrum cards of the past. I used to go every month for years in the early 80's and would love to relive some of those classic matches. I think we need to start a letter writing campaign to get it on the air somehow.

      Hi

Thanks for your reply. I have some good news. The old Spectrum Cards are airing once again on WWE 24/7. Although 24/7 is not airing on every cable service yet, it will eventually so you just need to hang tight for a little while.
