Social Commentary and The Munsters

Yes, I am still on my classic television Halloween kick and have been watching the BRILLIANT first season of THE MUNSTERS. Even after 43 years, these episodes are still incredibly funny and stand the test of time. Considering that the show still airs on television everyday on TV Land it is still attracting an audience no matter how
many years pass and pass.

.

What is interesting about viewing these episodes is the fact that there is much social commentary beneath the surface. Well, some of it is not even beneath the surface. The episode "My Fair Munster" has the family's neighbors repeatedly mentioning cryptic references about "those people" moving next door and the epsiodes that feature Eddy having problems in school with a teacher not so subtly present the notion the teacher is very prejudiced against Eddy for the way
he looks.

Is that the original Eddy actor Happy Derman in the pic?

Yes, THE MUNSTERS was primarily a lighthearted slapstick show, but what really made it a special and edearing program is that we really, really did like this kooky family because while they may have been odd (well, that's putting it mildly) we knew they were good people with a good heart and a loving family. While the social commentary in the series is kept to a minimum when it does appear it is poignant and smartly weaved into the humor and is never preachy.
