More on Power Records!
Power Records? What the heck is an essay about Power Records doing on a classic television blog? Oh, my friends, surely you did not forget that the great Power Records of Newark, NJ once released a great variety of television related record albums back in the 1970's? (By the way, Power Records kept their titles in production well into the early 1980's so to call them products of the 1970's would not be entirely accurate) I find it somewhat interesting to note how many Power Records tribute sites there are on the net. Even YouTube has reproduced a number of them. Looks like Power Records has not been forgotten and touched a number of people. I just did wish there was more information on the subject of the history of the series was available, but info on it has not been published. Oh well...I am sure it will occur sooner or later.
Back in the days before home entertainment had been greatly expanded to include DVD and videogames audio entertainment included record albums directed at kids that were based on TV programs and comic books. Power Records was the major superstar in this arena because it offered excellent book and record sets where you could read along with a dramatization of a comic book. Power Records had signed on with DC Comics and Marvel so with the weight of Superman, Batman, Spiderman and the Hulk on your side it was hard not to make a sale.
Power Records also added a number of excellent television series adaptations as well and these included the previously blogged about SPACE 1999, THE PLANET OF THE APES TV series (there was also adaptations of the films as well), THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, KOJAK(!), and, of course, STAR TREK. These audio records were pretty amazing and fun to listen to back in the day and the do deserve a little nod and appreciation for putting out such top notch material when entertainment choices were limited.
