I briefly mentioned this idiotic television program in my previous post and I just thought I'd mention that this wacky series has been released on DVD. If there was a television series that was incredibly embarrassingly wrongheaded it would be this 1980 television series that embodied the horrific position NBC was in, in 1980 when it offered one awful television series week after week and saw if collapse to third place in the ratings.

Pink Lady was a super hot duo that sold millions of albums in JAPAN. While they were definite superstars in Japan they were totally unknown in the USA. So, someone had the notion that this gal duo could draw ratings on a television variety program. In a way, this was similar to what happened earlier in this decade with Puffy Ami Yumi. However, there were a number of differences:

Puffy Ami Yumi had sold a solid number of CDs in the US marketplace and had performed a well received concert tour prior to getting their own television series.

The television series they got in the USA was an anime series and anime had been popular for quite some time in the US marketplace.

Puffy Ami Yumi could speak English. Pink Lady couldn't.

So how do you create a television variety hour around a non-English speaking pop duo? You add comedian Jeff Altman to the mix to joke his way out of it.

It didn't work and Pink Lady and Jeff remains one of the worst television programs in history. I remember watching it when I was 8 and thinking....This is dopey. It was. Bless its heart.

And whatever happened to Pink Lady?
