If there was one criticism that I would level at My So Called Life it would be the decided lack of humor on the program. One of the aspects that made Freaks and Geeks so unique and enjoyable was the fact that the characters never lost sight of being humorous. This helped make the program highly enjoyable and the well placed humor off set some of the overly dramatic overtones. (Please note: there is a huge difference between humor and comic relief. Humor is weaved well into the program. Comic relief is disjointed and never really works) This is not to say that there is anything inherently wrong with My So Called Life as the focus of the program was more towards the dramatic as opposed to the humor that would be impossible to avoid when the subject matter is clearly centered on "freaks" and their brethren the "geeks." In a way, this over emphasis on drama was probably what sunk My So Called Life as more banal teen programs had achieved much more success in the ratings...which is a shame. In a different world - such as the current expanding cable universe - My So Called Life might have had a chance. But, it was - like Freaks and Geeks - the a great show that arrived at the wrong time.
