When it came to live action superheroes on television there
were some solid hits (Batman, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk) and then there
were some duds such as the dull and short lived Spiderman series. While they
are long forgotten there were two superhero pilots that did not launch a series
although they were actually fairly decent as far as these types of programs go.
In 1979 there were two (yes two) Captain America television movies that were
decent programs could have spawned a successful series but they would not be
picked up as a weekly nor was the series of TV movies continued either. The
other oddball television movie of the week based on a Marvel superhero was Dr.
Strange. This is a somewhat odd selection for a weekly hero because Strange was
the "master of the mystic arts" and not a hero who dealt with
supervillian so this may have hurt the chances for this being picked up as a
series despite being a decent movie. Then again, there were no supervillians on
the Spiderman series and this harmed it significantly. (Then again, there were
no supervillians on the Hulk but the series was so well written it did not need
it) While these days animated series, motion pictures, direct to DVD movies are
common it is kind of odd to see how many superhero concepts were duds back in
the day. I guess it was a long road that thankfully Marvel kept with.
