I was flipping channels yesterday and came across a replay
of a horror movie on one of the Universal HD cable channel. The movie was laceType w:st="on">ISLANDlaceType> OF laceName w:st="on">TERRORlaceName> which was an old British Peter
Cushing film from the short lived competitor to Hammer Films called Planet
Productions. The film has a very simple plot: a bunch of amoeba like monsters
who look like the space ships from the 1950's version of WAR OF THE WORLDS.
These nasty little creatures suck out the blood and BONES (!) of its human
prey. This is a creepy little forgotten 1967 horror film that was a Saturday afternoon
staple back in the day. This was a film that I watched over and over again as
it appeared as part of the old syndicated television package back in the day
when horror films were UHF staples. Then, something happened….the UHF landscape
changed and after 30 years horror movies stopped being a staple of UHF
weekends. (They would be replaced by a number of weekly syndicated programs
many of which, honestly, were pretty good) It is kind of funny that I stumbled
across this old film because it was a favorite of mine as a kid thanks to the
creepy monsters (although it is not a particularly great film) and upon watching
it yesterday I said to myself…I haven't seen this film in over 20 years! I guess
if I had a point this post it would be that the great, expansive cable universe
is quickly becoming a dumping ground for pretty much any type of old film…and
this is a good thing. Why should I have to wait 20 years to see a B-movie I
dug? If a cable channel got its act together – even a small cable channel – and
brought back the old gimmick of a horror movie host they would do really well.
