Since I mentioned the Planet of the Apes television series it would be criminal for me not to make a mention of the absolutely brilliant Mego toys of the 1970's. Also, it would be criminal for me to ignore the excellent Planet of the Apes toys that were released in the 1990's and in 2006 that were based on the old Mego look. (Mego was a FANTASTIC toy company and I promise to mention more about it on one of my other blogs down the road) Even though they had stopped making Planet of the Apes movies in 1973 the films were wildly popular on television airings. In addition to the Planet of the Apes TV show there was also the decent Planet of the Apes cartoon that was quite good. The popularity of the second life of Planet of the Apes on television kept the merchandising machine alive well into the late 1970's. The Mego toys were top of the line and were SO well made that direct replications of them released 30 years later were not even released as a "retro" item. That means their design was and is timeless. Mego also made some fun Planet of the Apes commercials for their toys. I have a few in my private collection that are funny in a weird way because the apes in the commercials were REALLY mean.
