The Godzilla Cartoon Series

Since I mentioned the Godzilla's commercial forays on the small screen I thought I should also make a brief mention of the classic Godzilla cartoon series that aired in the late 1970's to cash in on a stream of "new" Godzilla films made circa 1972 - 1974 that were finally reaching American shores. Now, some folks may cringe at the mention of the NBC cartoon series as a classic series because it is generally considered a poorly written and produced series. What harmed the series was the fact that it followed the "team" formula visible in SCOOBY DO and JOHNNY QUEST among other. So, rather than appear as an original program it seemed like a rip-off of other series with the sole exception of having Godzilla appear. But, it was an appearance that was appreciated as Godzilla really WAS popular with kids at the time but I think it had more to do with the frequent appearance of Toho monsters on syndicated television as opposed to the poor 1970's cycle of films that had been dumped into drive-ins. Well, TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA was pretty awesome but the GODZILLA VS. MEGALON, GODZILLA VS. THE BIONIC MONSTER, et al were pretty bad.
