Happy Days - The First Season The Humor
I just viewed the first the five episodes of HAPPY DAYS and there is a lot I have to say about this program. Firstly, if there wasn't a feel for nostalgia for the 1950's in the America of the early 1970's this program would have lasted 6 episodes. It wasn't particularly bad, but it wasn't particularly good. Most of the humor isn't really humorous and it didn't seem to have an idea of what type of humor it wanted to use. (There is no laugh track in the first couple of episodes so it would seem that this was looking for a more MASH approach of a mildly humorous drama...but MASH was funny) There is an attempt to crank a few jokes out of some pranks, but the pranks aren't funny. They are mean spirited. And they are also pretty far removed from the plot of the series. Case in point, there is a throwaway character names Moose who is the brunt of a cruel joke. He was a character who was fat and wore glasses so it is perfectly ok to mock him. (This doesn't do wonders for making the characters who prank him likable) It would have been interesting to see where they would have went with the Moose character but he was dropped after a few episodes. Honestly, this was not a series that was looking for humor as much as it was looking for light drama. It didn't work and that is why the formula was changed after a couple of seasons.
